Director’s Note

Welcome to our production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr.! It has been a true joy and privilege to work with this cast of almost 60 talented teenagers, each bringing their own unique energy and perspective to the story. The Little Mermaid is more than just a beloved Disney classic; it’s a story of transformation, resilience, and the courage to step out of your comfort zone. These themes resonate deeply with our young cast as they navigate their own journeys of growth and self-discovery.

Ariel’s longing for a world beyond her own, her bravery in following her heart, and her willingness to take risks for what she believes in reflect the very real experiences of our performers. Like Ariel, many of them are learning what it means to have a voice and to embrace their identity, even when the path forward is uncertain. It has been incredible to watch them tackle these themes, not only through their characters but also in how they support each other as a cast and a team.

The rehearsal process has been a journey of its own—full of fun, creativity, and, of course, challenges. From perfecting dance numbers to developing the iconic characters we all know and love, these teens have shown remarkable dedication and enthusiasm. They’ve learned to balance school, extracurricular activities, and this production, all while maintaining their excitement and passion for the stage. Their hard work truly shines through in every scene, every song, and every step they take on that stage.

A production of this scale is only possible with the support of many, and I want to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude to Friends of Herriman and Herriman City for giving us this opportunity. Their unwavering support of the arts in our community makes it possible for these young performers to grow, express themselves, and share their talents. It’s a powerful reminder of how important it is to nurture creativity and provide spaces where our youth can thrive. We are also grateful for the parents and volunteers whose tireless efforts behind the scenes help make this production a success.

In particular, I want to thank the voters of Salt Lake County, who almost 30 years ago declared their support for the arts and culture by passing the ZAP Program. Through this program, a sales tax of 1 penny on every $10 you spend is reinvested in our community through grants to non-profit arts organizations like ours. This year, Salt Lake County voters will have the chance to continue supporting over 200 non-profits in our community by voting to keep this program in place. I invite you to join me in voting YES for ZAP.

Finally, thank you for being here to support live theater and the arts. We hope this performance inspires you as much as it has inspired us. Enjoy the magic under the sea!

Our story

Disney’s The Little Mermaid Jr. takes us on a magical journey beneath the sea, where a young mermaid named Ariel dreams of a life beyond her ocean home. As the youngest daughter of King Triton, ruler of the seas, Ariel is fascinated by the world above the water. Despite her father’s warnings, she longs to experience life on land and falls in love with a human prince named Eric. Determined to be with him, Ariel makes a dangerous deal with the sea witch Ursula, risking everything for the chance to follow her heart.

Along the way, Ariel faces difficult choices about identity, sacrifice, and the power of true love. With the help of her friends—Flounder, her loyal fish companion, Sebastian, a nervous but well-meaning crab, and Scuttle, the quirky seagull—Ariel must navigate the challenges of living between two worlds. But time is running out. If she can’t make Prince Eric fall in love with her in three days, she will lose her voice forever and belong to Ursula.

The show explores timeless themes that resonate with audiences of all ages: the importance of finding your voice, the courage to pursue your dreams, and the power of love and friendship to overcome even the darkest of obstacles. Ariel’s determination and bravery remind us all that sometimes the greatest risks lead to the most rewarding outcomes.

Filled with familiar songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl,” The Little Mermaid Jr. brings the beloved characters and enchanting music of the original Disney film to the stage. This adaptation is full of exciting dance numbers, humor, and heart, making it a fun and uplifting experience for audiences of all ages.

Prepare to dive into a world of adventure, magic, and unforgettable music as Ariel and her friends show us that the pursuit of happiness and belonging is worth the journey. We invite you to join us under the sea and let your imagination soar!
